Nursery

Page

An extract from a recent Ofsted report about the quality of our provision.

One parent, reflecting the views of many others, wrote, 'My child is constantly thrilled by the array of exciting activities that are on offer.'

Ofsted Report 2006

Number of places

We have part time education places for up to 64 children per session. The children have to be 3 years old. Nursery education funding applies to the term after a child’s third birthday.

These places are funded by the government so there is no charge.

We are also registered with Ofsted to provide up to 24 full day care places for working or studying mothers, fathers and carers. We are open from 8.00 to 6.00.

We can also offer different combinations of care. There is a charge for the wrap around care.

Please contact Sandra Wood for details. You can put your child’s name down from the age of about two. You can of course also put your child’s name down at other schools.

We follow the term patterns for Waltham Forest Schools, but are also open in most schools holidays. There is also an after school and breakfast club for older children.

Facilities

The nursery opened in 1978 in College Gardens, but relocated to its current premises in September 2008, into a newly refurbished, purpose built building.

The children are allocated to a key worker group of about 10 children and they all have their own base areas.

The indoor space provides areas for creative activities such as art, model making, water and sand play, imaginative play such as dressing up and a play house, computers with an interactive smart board, music and reading, building and games.

Garden

We believe very much in children having a rich outdoor environment, where many aspects of the indoor curriculum are also available.

There is a range of safe climbing and balancing equipment, bikes and scooters, sand pit and an allotment where the children grow vegetables. A large shelter enables us to use the outdoor area in all weathers.

We also have access to the gym at Wellington School, and in the summer have our own shaded courtyard.

The nursery has its own purpose built kitchen and dining room, where we can nurture our budding Jamie Olivers!

A recent addition is a fully equipped sensory room which is particularly helpful for children with special needs.

We have access to a speech and language therapist.

We also have staff with expertise in language, special needs as well as expertise in the Early Years Foundation Stage Curriculum.

Early Years Foundation Stage

This is the curriculum which is laid down by the government for children aged 0 to 5, from nursery to the end of the reception class in primary school.

It recognises that young children learn through play, so although they will be acquiring a whole range of skills and knowledge, this is done through fun, practical activities.

The curriculum is carefully planned, and there are different learning activities very day. We therefore ask that children attend every day, so that they do not miss out. For example, Monday is music day, Wednesday is outings day and Friday is library day.

Transferring to Primary School

Primary school admission is a separate process from nursery admission. It therefore does not make any difference what nursery a child has attended.

We have good links with all our feeder schools.

Visitors are always welcome, please contact us for further information.

The most recent Ofsted inspection states ...

"Good teaching, with some outstanding features, and an excellent curriculum combine to foster stimulating learning…behaviour is good and outstanding relationships help the children to develop highly positive attitudes''.
